Abbas Mastan made Race four years back, which was a hit, now they are back with the official remake of 2003 Hollywood realse “Italian Job”. Though rights of remake are taken, PLAYERS is not a scene to scene copy of “Italian Job”. Abbas Mastan has made an effort to make the remake that would fit Desi audiance but on the whole movie fails to impress the audiance.
Players is the story of a big International gold robbery. Charli (Abhishek Bachchan) and Riya (Bipasha Basu) are partners in crime and they plan robberies and con together. Six months after and before a con job they stay away from each other to avoid being a suspect. Charli recieves a gift from his friend Raj (Aftab Shivdasani), who was killed by Russian Mafia. In a CD, Raj tells Charli about ten thousand crore rupees worth of gold would be transported from Russia to Romania. Raj also tells Charli that to rob this Gold, he would need a team of worlds best players and only one person can assemble that team Victor Braganza (Vinod Khanna).
Victor makes a team – Bilal Bashir (Sikander Kher), an explosive expert who likes foreign cars, Sunny Mehra (Omi Vaidya) a make-up artist, Ronny (Bobby Deol) a magician, Riya (Bipasha Basu) an expert machinist. To hack the satelite, this team requires a hacker. Naina (Sonam Kapoor), Victors daughter who is a masters in ethical hacking helps them to find worlds best hacker Spider (Neil Nitin Mukesh). And together they successfully robs the gold but after the robbery one of the players betrays others and runs away with the gold, leaving others to die but somehow almost all the players survive and plan to take revenge.
Abhishek’s performance is same as in his other movies, the attitude that is required for the character of a team leader was missing. Bipasha was looking absolutely hot but she didn’t give her best performace. Sonam Kapoor is a disappointment, her acting is not real in the movie. Boby Deol’s role is very small and he hardly opens his mouth. Sikander Kher gave an average performace. Neil Nitin Mukesh to some extend gave the required fearful performace. Omi and Johnny Lever as always added some humor in the movie. Vinod Khanna’s performance was weak.
Music by Pritam is another disappointment. Not even a single number is hit.
Abbas Mastan has done a good job with direction. The movie has some beautiful scenes shot in Siberia, Amsterdam and New Zealand. Scenes of speeding cars are also nicely taken. The elongated limousines, the long car chases, the heist on the train - everything looks glossy and out of this world.
The second half of the movie is very long and give a feeling of a movie that never ends. On the whole the movie fails to entertain the audiance.
